The problem with existing tools

Most personal finance apps fall into one of two camps. They're either too complex — requiring you to learn a methodology before you can do anything useful — or they show you what happened without helping you understand what it means or what to do next.

Australian-specific options are even thinner. Apps built for the US market don't understand AU bank formats, AU tax years, or AU financial terminology. Pocketbook tried to fill this gap and did it well for a while. Then it closed.

The privacy decision

Early on, we made a decision that shaped everything: no bank logins. Ever.

The standard approach — connect your bank via open banking — works, but it means your credentials or access tokens are held somewhere. We wanted something simpler: you export a file from your own bank, you import it here, and the parsing happens in your browser before anything reaches our servers.

This isn't just a privacy feature. It's a trust feature. You don't have to wonder what we can see. We can only see what you give us.

What we're building toward

Beholdr isn't trying to be everything. It's trying to answer three questions well: where did my money go, what can I afford to do next, and am I on track?

When those three questions are answered clearly and honestly, most financial anxiety fades. Not because the numbers changed — because you can see them.

That's what we're building. A financial decision engine, not a tracker. For Australians, built by Australians.
